SUMMER 2011

What an amazing weekend! Friday night started out with a fun-filled girls night consisting of wine, laughs and long lost friends who finally decided it was time to make an appearance. Later that night, my good friend Julie AKA "Secret Jesus Meeting" headed over to The Well to grab some drinks, get a little crazy and party it up with J. MILLLLLL! Oh, how I miss that girl.

Saturday, Jenna and I headed to Hermosa Beach to find her a new place to live and what an experience that was. After being turned down numerous times for having a cat she finally found a cute, quaint place within walking distance to the beach. After driving down the coast, blasting old school music and having lunch on the pier we were on our way back to HollyHOOD but not before getting pulled over and finding out we were degenerates. LOL. Luckily, we were let go and made it back safe and sound.

Sunday, I had the pleasure of hanging with the Noon family in San Francisco for the day, shopping for "future" homes, eating amazing Italian food and touring the beautiful city. I completely fell in love and can't wait to go back. I am so thankful to have such amazing people in my life. Thank you for making this summer complete and cheers to all of you. :)

EXPERIENCE LA

Throughout my 2011 summer break away from nursing school, I was able to enjoy traveling around with friends and family. After all of my planned trips expired, I found myself lying around the house catching up on pitiful, guilty pleasure reality television, sleeping and being just plain lazy. I quickly went insane longing for productivity to enter into my life and realized it was time for me to get out and see LA like I have never seen it before.

I have made a vow to myself to visit a new place each day until I start class on July 6th and will be documenting the process. First stop LACMA. Enjoy my journey.

FASHION TOAST... AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL.. AMAZING STYLE

http://www.fashiontoast.com/

TWENTY SOMETHING TWENTY EVERYTHING

Being on summer break, I have a lot of time on my hands. Although it’s driving me absolutely crazy, I have managed to pick up a few books. I wanted to share this book with you. A good friend of mine Miss Jenna recommend it to me and it really put a lot of things into perspective for me. Written by Christine Hassler, her witty advice, chapter-by-chapter exercises and life advice really hits home.

Being in our mid to late twenties is a constant battle. I find myself continuously struggling with "having it all."  Hassler dedicates an entire chapter to this concept. What does "having it all" mean to you? Is it having the career you have always dreamed of? Making a great living? Having a family? Having children? Helping and influencing others to improve their quality of life? A great social life with enough time to devote whatever time you have left over to building a family and being a professional workingwoman? How in the hell do we find the time to "have it all" and what is the correct path to take us there?

After I decided to go back to school to become a Nurse, I finally found myself in a place I had longed to be for quite some time. Although I have a long road ahead of me, my career at this point is my number one priority. On the back burner is one day finding a husband (or a boyfriend for starters LOL), having children and an overall happy life. What scares me the most is not knowing how to make this happen. There is SO much pressure and anxiety runs high. I sometimes wonder why we as woman feel the need to control everything. Is it the fact that we finally have a voice and the endless opportunities to make our ideal life happen? Maybe it's our nature. Modern society constantly pushes life clues as to what we should want or expect out of our lives. What do you expect of yourself? What do others expect of you? How do you practice balance and what are your greatest struggles as a young twenty something woman?

Please share your stories and advice. I would love to hear from you. As we guide each other through our crazy twenties, lets ride this out together and spread what we know as woman to each other in hopes to find what we are looking for and how to be satisfied with "having it all" in the moment.

WEAR SUNSCREEN!!!

As summer finally approaches, I encourage you to protect yourself from Ultraviolet light and over all skin damage from sun exposure. Make sure you protect yourself during this hot and beautiful season. Below are a list of sunscreens that I recommend. Enjoy!

1.) Cosmedix "Reflect"
This SPF all natural sunscreen is great for all skin types. It is oil- free so it is perfect for anyone with oil/acneic skin. Reflect contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which are physical sunscreen protectants that reflect verses absorbing into the skin. This non-chemical spray is perfect to carry with you throughout the day and can be reapplied as needed.

2.) Dermalogica's "Multivitamin Body Block"
This non-greasy formula contains full spectrum UVA and UVB protection. It contains Panthenol which relieves dry and itchy skin. It also aids in the repair of skin damage.

Also, below is one of my favorite Youtube videos titled "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen) by Baz Luhrmann. Now really, go ahead and wear sunscreen!!!!

COSMEDIX CORRECTIVES "RESCUE"

I hope that I am finding you back to normal after a crazy Fourth of July weekend! I know I am now just recovering from an exciting time in Lake Tahoe with an amazing group of fun loving, rowdy friends. After a few too many cocktails, hot days, cold nights, plane rides and a lack of sleep, my skin is feeling a little under the weather.

Since returning from my trip, I wake up each morning dying to soak my skin in something hydrating, smooth and refreshing. I have been doubling up on my water intake and exfoliating at least 1 time a week. This has been helping but my skin still needed that extra boost to rid itself of the lackluster, dry look that we all dread.

I currently work with a line called Cosmedix and frequently use "Rescue" on my clients who have sensitivities to waxing or high grade peels. You can use this as a mask or also as a spot treatment. Last night I decided to sleep with this as a mask over night and my skin has never looked so amazing!!!

Rescue is fortified for people who experience irritated or inflamed skin. Rescue is especially good for people who have Eczema or Dermatitis. It is also used for post-resurfacing and/or post-laser. It may sound a little intense however this product saved my skin and I want to pass this information along to my viewers.

Rescue is an all-natural blend of cherry bark extract infused with a soothing shea butter formula that accelerates healing and dramatically reduces inflammation. This product is extremely emollient and is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory purposes.

What's also great is that when your skin is feeling really dry you can even use this product as a moisturizer to help relieve the tightness and dryness. Plus, it gives you a natural dewy look. You can also add a tinted moisturizer with Rescue to give your skin an over all even toned, fresh appearance. Glow away lackluster skin and welcome a fresh and beautiful look!!!

To purchase Rescue or to book your next facial or waxing appointment call Hands On Spa @ (310)860-0137. Ask for Tiffany Shea.

THE BALD AND THE BEAUTIFUL "BRAZILIAN WAXING"

After watching an episode of Kourtney tearing up Khloe's "Hoo Ha" on Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami last night on E! I thought I would send you some information on what to look out for when taking the plunge. Waxing down under can be scary and it's important that you choose wisely when choosing a Waxing Specialist. Below are some major points to watch out for when booking your Brazilian or Bikini waxing appointment.

DO YOUR RESEARCH
Come on ladies, it's your Vagina. The idea alone isn't worth the pain to just show up to any spa or salon and hope that the Waxing Specialist knows exactly what she is doing. Research well-known spas and spa reviews before you prance yourself into any waxing studio. Ask friends about their experiences and who they recommend as well. You will thank yourself in the end.

ASK QUESTIONS
When you call to make your appointment ask the receptionist as many questions as you need to in order to get a better understanding of what will happen during your appointment. (More than likely, the front desk receptionist will not have all of the answers to your questions so insist that a Waxing Specialist call you back with the information that you need.) Here are a list of some questions I think are important for you to ask:

-What type of wax do you use?
Hard Wax? Cream Based Wax? Do you use strips?

-How long will the appointment take?
If someone tells you that the appointment could last for an hour be aware. A Brazilian alone in which everything from front to back is removed should not take an hour. This may mean that the Technician is still learning to master the Bikini or Brazilian wax and could be in training. Anywhere from 15-40 minutes is normal depending on the length of your hair growth.

-Do I need to trim before I come in or will a technician trim for me?
This is important. For those of you who do not know, in order for your hair to be removed properly and in a timely manner, your hair must be 1/4 of an inch long. Any longer tends to get messy and can be tricky to remove even for the pros.

In my opinion, as a licensed Aesthetician and someone who waxes regularly, who wants to sit in front of a mirror attempting to trim down under hoping that they can see closely enough so that they do not nick or cut themselves. I'm sorry but, "NO THANK YOU!" If the receptionist tells you that their Waxing Specialist's does not trim then call another spa. It's part of the job and trimming comes with the territory. They do this every day. Nothing should shock them at this point in the game.

SHOWING UP TO THE APPOINTMENT
1.) BE ON TIME!!! Especially if this is your first visit to the salon or spa. There is and always should be some type of paperwork to fill out in order to access your needs appropriately.

2.) Come in clean!!! If you do not have time to take a shower before you come in for your appointment, take some feminine wipes with you on the road so that when you show up to the salon or spa you can take a restroom break before you go in. More than likely the spa should have feminine wipes there for you to use. If not, be thoughtful and take care of yourself before your appointment.

3.) If you are running late, please notify the salon or spa so that they can figure out a way to fit you in in order for you to be taken care of properly. You have to remember that in most cases the Waxing Specialist will have appointments after you. It is not fair to make the other clients wait because you were running late. Be forward with the receptionist and ask if there will be enough time to get the job done. If not, reschedule for a later time or another day. You do not want to be rushing a Brazilian or Bikini waxing appointment. You want this experience to go as smoothly as possible. Literally.

4.) Every salon and spa had developed a new or cute name for Brazilian waxing so know exactly what you want and how to get that across to your Technician. Here is the breakdown:

Brazilian: Everything must go!!! From the front to the back every little hair is taken.
Bikini: It's exactly what it states. If you were to be wearing a bikini you would be taking just the outside hair growth so nothing would be seen.
Extended Bikini: If you want a little more taken in from the normal bikini line then tell and show them exactly where and how you want it. (This isn't brain surgery. I'm sure the Waxing Specialist will understand.) :)

It's quite simple. I never understood how some women would come to me after a bad waxing experience and say, "She took too much!" Be direct and precise when explaining how you want the ending result to appear. If you want a landing strip or any type of shape it is easier to just explain that to the Technician then use any technical term that you found online. Every place is different.

DURING THE APPOINTMENT
1.) Make sure that the Technicians license is placed in visible sight. It should always be visibly available for anyone who enters the room.

2.) ALWAYS make sure that the technician is wearing gloves.

3.) Check to make sure that the Technician is not "double dipping". (Double dipping is when she has applied a stick to your body and then proceeded to reuse the same stick by placing it back into the wax.)

That is cross contamination. I do not care how she tries to explain to you that this is O.K. It's not! NO the wax is not hot enough to kill the bacteria. It does not matter if she cleaned you off first. NO, NO, NO !!! Simply tell her that you would feel a lot more comfortable if she was to use as many sticks as it takes to remove the desired amount of hair.

4.) DO NOT feel embarrassed. Believe me when I tell you that the Waxing Specialist's knew exactly what they had signed up for when receiving their license as a Beauty Specialist. They do this on a day to day basis and if they thought it was disgusting or if they were truely uncomfortable doing their job they wouldn't be. It is as simple as that. They have seen it all.

5.) If you need to take a break... DO IT! Look, this is not a walk in the park. It's painful. For some less for others more. It just depends on your pain tolerance. Do not hesitate to ask your Technician. Openly communicate with her. She is concerned with your well-being and comfort during this process just as much as you are.

AFTER CARE FOR BRAZILIANS AND BIKINI WAXING
I am going to make this short and simple. Follow these instructions and you will be on your way to a perfected bikini area.

1.) Wear comfortable loose pants to the appointment. Jeans are too hard to move in and can irritate the area making it uncomfortable for you.

2.) Avoid using any harsh soaps with fragrance and/or any products with any type of alcohol around the area that has been waxed. Waxing is a form of exfoliation and using these types of products can strip the skin.

3.) Avoid exfoliating the waxed area for up to 72 hours after your appointment.

4.) Avoid sun exposure and/or tanning bed exposure for up to 72 hours after your appointment.

5.) Invest in an after care lotion specified for post waxing. This will allow the skin to calm and can also aid in the prevention of ingrown hairs.

Well Ladies, I think I have covered a great amount of information when it comes to Brazilian and Bikini waxing. I thank you for taking the time to read this and hope that it helps you when booking your next appointment. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me. I am always here to help.

If you are in the Los Angeles area and would like to book your next waxing or facial appointment with me please contact Hands On Spa @ (310) 860-0137 located in Beverly Hills.

VITAMIN (C) IS FOR COLLAGEN

VITAMIN C AND YOUR SKIN

Beautiful, healthy skin is a much sought-after trait in our society. Many of you are still young, fresh and more than likely wrinkle-free however, it is never to early or late to start a preventative skin care regimen. "C" your way to healthy skin.

What does Vitamin C do for the skin?
Vitamin C is known for it's antioxidant and healing properties. Each day our skin is exposed to pollutants, dirt and debris leading to free radical damage. Many of you are asking, "What is free radical damage?" Free Radical damage in simple terms is when the cells within your body are attacked which then interferes with the cells ability to function properly. The cell is no longer able to remain healthy and plump which keeps the skin soft and wrinkle free. There are many reasons as to why the skin ages however, free radical damage is one of the main causes of aging and skin damage which effects the way your body produces collagen. This is where Vitamin C comes in.

Researchers have reported that collagen within the body was stimulated to produced up to 8 times more when it is exposed to Vitamin C. That's what I call a cocktail! Vitamin C also helps diminish the signs of age spots which occur from the effects of sun damage. Age spots usually appear topically or even down into the lower layers of your skin known as the "Dermis". No matter where they appear, keep aware of their growth, size and coloring. These darker spots that you have seen pop up out of nowhere will one day only worsen if you do not start taking proper care of them now. This is why it is important to double up on your dosages of Vitamin C.

FOODS THAT CONTAIN VITAMIN C
Acerola: " The Barbados Cherry" or "West Indian Cherry" One of the most powerful natural sources of Vitamin C.

Apricots: Eating one apricot provides more than 5% of your recommended daily intake.

Blueberries, Kiwi and Bell Peppers are all jam-packed with Vitamin C which all aid in the production of healthy cells leading to young, radiant looking skin.

PRODUCTS THAT CONTAIN VITAMIN C
Cosmedix "Pure C" Mixing Crystals: 100% pure Vitamin C that can be mixed into any serum, moisturizer, SPF or lotion. Use AM and PM.

Cosmedix "Clear" Clarifying Mask: Natural Skin Brightener, Anti Bacterial, Anti-inflammatory mask that will purify, heal and calm your skin.

Cosmedix "Purity Clean" Cleanser: Cools and calms acne prone, sun damaged skin all while aiding in the production of collagen. Amazing cleanser!!!
